FMP Idea Development -
Originally I was going to base my project around crime and reportage (court drawings) and producing a magazine on this. However, after attending many court trials to build my work upon I found that I wanted to expand on this idea of a magazine, reportage and design and decided to work more towards something that I would benefit from and want to pursue in my future as a career.

I decided to use the theme DESIGN for my starting point and look at how illustration is used within it. So for my final major project I will look at how illustration is used within design and produce and illustrated book cover designs, typography and a catalogue built up of my reportage illustration which executes a contemporary, minimalist layout design.

My theme is Design
I decided to base my final major project around design and focus on how illustration is used within it.
I feel that I will benefit from this more as I want to work in design after university.
My intent is to produce 3 products that show how illustration is used in design. I will produce 1)A Perfect Bound Book, which is consisted of my reportage illustrations that are presented in a way which executed layout design. 2) Re-illustrating and designing book covers. 3) illustrating and designing typographic titles and quotes from the books i have designed.
I will present the most effective book cover along with the title and quote to that book as a set.

My target audience is for all ages
What I hope to have achieved at the end of my final major project
is to have a professionally printed brochure, printed book cover designs and alphabet/typographic letters, which will work as an example of my design and illustration skills that I can use in my portfolio for when I approach potential clients and junior designer companies.
My first design product is to design an editorial brochure piece, which I will present in a contemporary, minimalist, graphic fashion. The brochure will be a travel piece that will consist of my reportage illustrations based on several cities that I have travelled to - New York, Boston, London and Birmingham, Chester.
My brochure will be A5, cover type matt, cover paper weight 250gm, Outer cover lamination MATT, inner pages weight 130gm, inner pages MATT paper, total pages 51-60. www.Printkiosk.co.uk
I will include information alongside the reportage illustrations that will be presented in a stylistic form in various fonts and sizes, which I will have experimented with and developed to give a more effective and stylised page design.
The basic reason for doing this is more for the page layout designs rather than illustrations.

My second design product that I want to produce will be several book cover designs which consist of layout design and illustration, which I will also use in my portfolio to help show potential clients and job opportunities my design skills.
I will present 1 final book cover, which I think is the most effective, alongside the typography i will illustrate and design (my 3rd design product)
I will design these book covers-
- Lolita
- Mary Poppins
- To Kill A Mockingbird
- The Great Gatsby
- The Wizard Of Oz
- Sherlock Holmes
- Of Mice and Men
My third design product will be illustrated and designed typography which will be a title and a quote taken from the books I have designed covers for and will present one final book cover with one title and one quote together to work as a final complete set. I will choose the most effective title and quote designs to present with the book cover.

Evaluation
I felt more at ease with doing this, even though I only had a few weeks left before the deadline, as I was on familiar ground because design comes naturally to me so it was pretty easy for me to crack out several pieces of work for this.
The main problem that I encountered was when I was designing and preparing my reportage and layout design book and having enough time to produce enough work for it to send off to print. I had to give myself over a week spare for this and because I only had a few weeks remaining, I had to produce enough work for my book with taking into consideration the time it will take to have my work printed and delivered before the 6th. And also allowing me enough time to produce other work i.e book cover designs and typography.
But what also put me behind for this book was when something was not right or to my liking I had to start again to get it right. A lot of this trouble came from drawing my reportage illustrations and learning how to use Indesign off my own back, which caused a lot of the delays with sending my work to print.
It had taken me a few days to finally understand how Indesign works and how to prepare it for print. Even though this was hassle at the time I am glad I had those days dedicated to Indesign because now I am pretty fluent in using it.
As this was my first experience with having a book printed with a company, rather than doing it myself I am pretty happy with the outcome. It shows what I wanted to achieve, which was to have a book printed that consisted of contemporary, minimalist layout page designs with my reportage illustrations included.
I'm also happy with the outcome of my book cover and typography set. I would like to have produced more sets as final pieces and for my portfolio, but due to lack of time I was not able to. Though this is not a problem, as I can produce more in my spare time for portfolio.
If was to change or improve anything it would be to work on my time management skills as I didn't really take into consideration the problems that can occur with software or the process of producing images to a standard that i'm happy with. Just basic time management skills with individual pieces of work, especially when print is involved. This time time could have been spent on developing and improving my other work i.e book cover designs and typography. However, like I said I now am pretty fluent in Indesign, which I will benefit from when applying for design jobs. Overall I'm happy with the products I wanted to produce and have completed my intentions.
