After I had analysed and deconstructed Jess Douglas's reportage illustration I was then able to apply those key factors of how her illustrations communicate to an audience the complexities of an urban environment in minimalist style to my own experiments. I applied her use of detail and composition of exteriors, colour, and overall approach to a complex visual.
I have analysed and deconstructed my experiments in order to show how I was able to achieve the final outcome with the use of the key elements, which I had taken from Jess Douglas's work that show how her reportage illustration can communicate an understanding to an audience the complexities of an urban environment. I have focused on the exteriors of pubs in the city as I find the architecture to look interesting and full of character, which will add more detail and engagement to the final image. I came across various styles of urban pubs and have taken into consideration the key elements, especially the composition and use of colour when illustrating them.
I have experimented with the composition of how the pubs are sitting on the page, with how they are balanced with colour or line work. I have also experimented with the use of colour - highlighting with white or applying small amount of colour.
Applying a fixed background colour enhances the illustrations with the elements incorporated and really executes how reportage illustration can communicate to an audience the complexities of an urban environment in a minimalist style.
